Choosing a Good School
How to Choose a Good School
Request a FREE Career GuideChoosing the best medical transcription training for you is a very important decision. When deciding which medical transcription training to choose, you will want to be sure pick one that is of high-quality. There are some medical transcription training courses out there that will provide you with very little actual quality training. The main purpose of your training is to learn the skill of a medical transcriptionist. This is why choosing quality medical transcription training is so important.
A quality medical transcription training course should incorporate the following subjects:
  • Guidance on how to increase your typing speed. Many medical transcriptionists are compensated on a production basis. Payment by line of transcribed text is a common form of production based compensation. If you can increase your typing speed, you will be able to transcribe more lines of text quicker and essentially make more money.
  • Keyboard shortcuts. For the same reasons your medical transcription training should help you increase your typing speed, it should also cover keyboard shortcuts. Instead of repetitively typing long medical terms, keyboard shortcuts will allow you to easily and quickly insert those terms. This will increase your typing speed and help you make more money.
  • Cover all major medical specialties. Since you will not know what types of reports you will be transcribing once employed, you will want to be sure that your medical transcription training covers all medical specialties. This will allow you to have training and experience in all medical specialties and you will be qualified for many different medical transcription positions.
  • Medical Terminology and Anatomy. It is not necessary to know processes of the human body or know what each organ does. However you will need to know how to spell them as a medical transcriptionist. Quality medical transcription training will cover anatomy and include exercises on spelling in detail to best prepare you to become a medical transcriptionist.
  • **Actual doctor dictation. I cannot stress enough how important this is!! Doctors can be difficult to understand and when they dictate, it is even worse. By choosing a medical transcription training course that uses real doctor dictation, you will learn how to adapt to different accents, speed of speech, and background noises. The best way to learn a new skill is to practice, practice, practice. A large portion of your medical transcription training should be spent transcribing actual doctor dictation. Some schools have created dictation where the speaker talks slowly and clearly and enunciates every word. This is not reality and will not prepare you for the job. In reality, doctors don’t want to spend too much time dictating so they will do it quickly. Sometimes while they eat or while they are in noisy places like a cafeteria- and they won’t pause if there is an announcement over the PA system. They just keep going. So look for a course that has real doctor dictation. By practicing with actual doctor dictation, you will be performing the actual day-to-day tasks of a medical transcriptionist which will better prepare you once you are on the job. You will essentially be gaining experience as you train.
Other things to look for:
  • Is the medical transcription training competency based? This means that the training course will teach you all the skills and competencies to succeed as a medical transcriptionist.
  • Does the medical transcription training offer resources for support? Most online medical transcription training programs are self passed which allows you to train when you have time. Because you are not in the traditional classroom setting, doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t have the same resources. Student support is essential when going through any training program. Excellent student support to answer your questions can really make a difference in your training experience. A quality medical transcription training program may also have chats and forums for additional support.
  • Medical Transcription Editing. Medical transcription editors are needed to review, edit and correct documents created by speech recognition software. With so many ways to pronounce the same words, words that sound the same, speech accents, background noises, etc. speech recognition technology will not be able to accurately transcribe medical reports. Medical transcription editors need to have the skills of a medical transcriptionist plus have editing skills. There is only one school that I know of that offers a medical transcription editing course and it covers everything you need to know about medical transcription as well as medical transcription editing. This is a good option because you can train for multiple career paths. You can learn more about medical transcription editing training here.
  • Is the medical transcription course AHDI approved? AHDI (Association of Healthcare Documentation Integrity) is a medical transcription association that approves medical transcription courses. You will want to be sure to enroll in a course that is AHDI approved. That way you know that it is a good, reputable course!
